• What projects should consider HDPE as an option?
  While carbon steel and stainless steel have long been the go-to options, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pressure piping has quickly emerged as a flexible and easy-to-manage alternative, particularly for projects involving water systems and treatment, cooling systems, corrosive liquids and seismic rated construction. How can pipe selection increase energy loss? There are three main ways that making the wrong pipe decision can increase energy use:

  • Additional interventions needed due to the impact the pipe has on the product during transfer. For example, pumps to maintain flow due to friction or fans and other temperature controls
  • Increased installation costs of heavy or difficult to handle pipe
  • Additional ongoing maintenance requirements

• What are the key considerations when managing expansion in above-ground HDPE pipe installations?
  • Ensure there is enough space for your pipe to both expand and contract
  • When ordering pipe, order additional pipe to manage the expansion.
  • Clear the space for the pipe to move of rocks and objects which could potentially damage the pipe
  • Use high quality brackets and restrictors
